ABOUT US

Our Mission

The Sumner Community Food Bank is a non-profit organization that provides nutritious food with dignity to our neighbors in need in Sumner (98390 zip code) and Lake Tapps (98391 zip code) through donations and the work of dedicated volunteers. Our mission is also to be good stewards of food surpluses, and increase public awareness on issues of hunger in our community. When a surplus exists, we save countless dollars for other food banks and charitable nonprofits by providing an efficient distribution and sharing of food.

Our food bank is primarily a volunteer-based organization with only 1 paid employee. We rely upon individuals, businesses, churches, and service clubs in the community for the resources needed to sustain our mission.

Sumner Community Food Bank is an independent registered non-profit charitable 501(c)3 organization. Any donations are tax deductible to the extent allowed by law.

Sumner Community Food Bank Bylaws were updated by the Board and approved by the general membership effective October 27, 2015.

Our History

The Sumner Community Food Bank has been serving the community for the past 30 years, since the mid-1980s.

Originally located in the current Sumner library building, the food bank has had several locations over the years.   These include: the United Methodist Church, a building on Pease Avenue and a storefront on Main Street, prior to moving to its current location.  The former Lake Tapps Brewery building, the current home of the Sumner Community Food Bank, was acquired through the dedicated efforts and tremendous support of the Sumner Rotary and dedicated on October 1, 2002.

What We Do

The Sumner Community Food Bank offers healthy fresh and packaged food and beverages, pet food, child care items and personal hygiene products that have been donated from local businesses and farms, food drives and individuals.

Food is also received through other non-profit organizations such as Emergency Food Network and Northwest Harvest.  Additional meats, eggs and bulk staples are purchased with donated funds.

No one is turned away – all are cared for.   We provide assistance to all people without regard to religious preference, race, national origin, age, sex, marital status, or disability, and all services are given at no charge or obligation.

Each client or family receives enough food to feed each member in the household for several days, and can return after 30 days if their need continues.

Approximately 274 families and 1000 unique individuals are served every month.  That means we feed over 10,000 people each year!  And this number continues to grow!

The Food Bank is also a great place to learn more about additional resources and organizations that connect people to the services they may need throughout the community.
